My students need very frequent sensory input to help with some of their sensory processing challenges. We are looking to create outdoor sensory stations with manipulatives in our sandbox and water table.
I teach students in third through fifth grade with Autism in a self contained classroom. My students perform well below their designated grade level both academically and functionally, but despite this, they continue to achieve new things.
My phenomenal TAs and I are always challenged to think of creative ways to adapt teaching materials so that all students can access and understand the curriculum.
We use items such as adapted materials, schedules, and sensory input everyday to help our students learn and grow!
My Project
We are a year round school, so we thought it would be great to create some outdoor sensory academic, functional, and play based stations. Last year we created a 3 raised garden beds, and we are going to continue our garden this year.
In addition to the garden station, we will also have a sand station and a water station.
We have requested items such as water beads, kinetic sand, and funnels, shovels, buckets, and other toys for them to use in either sand or water. During these outdoor centers, we will be working on developing students communication and social skills in a play based, natural environment. We have also requested the 7 gallon pots as the base of a natural pole bean tepee that students will read under with their buddies.
We are very excited about creating outdoor stations to help our students learn and interact with their environment. Sensory integration help students with Autism engage in academic and play activities. Thank you so much for supporting my project!
