My school is a small rural community set in the heart of thoroughbred horse farms country. Many of our students come from families who have lived in Anthony for generations, as the horse farm communities are often family run businesses. The students who attend this school live in a truly multicultural area, with about equal numbers of White, Hispanic, and African American children. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and do not all have the same opportunities.
My goal is to help our students understand the importance of reading for pleasure by creating an "Outdoor Reading Oasis"!
Our students, will be able to listen to teachers read aloud stories and poetry in a natural beautiful setting. They can also read outdoors themselves and learn to love the peaceful enjoyment of reading out in nature.
My Project
Having an outdoor reading space just outside our library will provide a cozy reading nook that teachers can enjoy bringing students to for a read aloud, or peaceful independent reading time. All schools need areas or zones dedicated to recreational independent reading. I believe its important for students to take ownership of this space, so I have planned for some art students to paint the teacher chair, make your own wind-chimes, and a make your own stepping stones to make it truly child created. Teachers and students will appreciate and relax from a busy day in quiet, reflective outdoor reading oasis!
