Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school where the population is 90%+ free or reduced-price lunch. Our preschool students are made up of VPK, ESE, and Head Start students. The preschool students are part of the elementary school. They get to experience being in the school and becoming familiar with the building and learning environment. This helps to make the transition to Kindergarten much smoother.
The ages of our preschool students range from 3 years to 5 years old.
Head Start is a program for low income families, VPK is a program funded by the state to allow all 4 year old children the opportunity to go to preschool, and ESE students are students with special needs.
My Project
Our school does not have a dedicated playground for preschool students. We do have grass areas for our students to play and we bring out small toys for them to use. The additional items in the area would allow for more students to play. A crawling tunnel and balance beam would make the area feel more like a playground and make it much more inviting to the preschoolers.
Recess has an important role in learning.
It represents a planned break from rigorous cognitive tasks. Recess is a dedicated time to rest, play, imagine, think, move, and socialize. After recess students are more attentive and better able to perform cognitively. In addition, recess helps young children develop social skills that are otherwise not acquired in the more structured classroom environment.
