My Pre-K classroom is composed of a dynamic group of children from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and family backgrounds who are starting their life long journey of education. More than two-thirds of my classroom is composed of students living in high-poverty and come from ELL families. Many families may be encountering additional barriers ranging from navigating their recent arrival in the United States or living in high stress environments because of a lack of resources.
Many of my students come from families who themselves have not had positive early education experiences and it is my job to make their first introduction to school a positive one.
Despite the challenges the students in my Pre-K classroom may be facing they will all have the potential and opportunity to develop academically, socially, and emotionally when they walk through the doors of my classroom.
My school is located in one of the most diverse cities in our state and is composed of families representing a variety of languages, religions, cultures, and family structures. What my students all have in common is their eagerness to learn and grow.
My Project
For many of our students, recess is the only time they spend outdoors. The materials we are hoping to receive promote active engagement in outdoor play. Outdoor play promotes physical development, brain development, social and emotional development, and provides opportunities to bring classroom learning outdoors.
With the facilitation of caring teachers and a variety of quality materials children are engaged and contributing to their overall development.
Our students love recess but many lack experience with how to play in a variety of ways. The materials we have chosen provide a variety of active learning opportunities that will reach a wide range of students.
We are asking for a plethora of materials to encourage gross motor development (the pogo jumper, the ride on toys, hula hoops, jump ropes and the horse hopper), as well as cooperative play (the parachute and the carnival games). We are also asking for materials to support children who would like quieter outdoor activities including chalk, bubbles, and sand toys. To make these materials accessible daily and to keep them cared for we are also asking for a storage container that can be left outdoors on our playground.
