Outdoor Learning During a Pandemic

My Students

My fourth grade students are a high-energy group who require a lot of movement breaks, flexibility, encouragement and love. They come from a variety of backgrounds; fifty percent of my students live in high poverty areas and many of them are English Language Learners. Many of the students at my school have also experienced trauma, show signs of depression and suffer from intense anxiety. These are common experiences for children today, especially as we are now living through an unprecedented pandemic. One way I'd like to reduce anxiety in my classroom is by creating a safe and comfortable environment that includes outdoor seating so that we can take our learning outside where students can enjoy the fresh air and feel a little safer.

My Project

These unprecedented times call for creative measures to reimagine school. The CDC has recommended that teachers keep students outdoors as much as possible, and reference eating lunch and having recess outdoors daily. I would like to take this advice a step further and provide for full days of outdoor learning.

In order to create a more comfortable daily outdoor learning experience, I would like to provide my students with comfortable seating.

In years past, we have spent time outdoors for short periods of time, but this year I would like to spend full days learning outdoors. These chairs, one allocated to each student in my class, will assist in keeping students outdoors longer, as students will be more comfortable than sitting on the ground and, as such, better prepared to learn.
