Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every one of my students qualifies for free/reduced lunch and the majority of them are English Language Learners. They each have a unique culture and background that our school seeks to value and celebrate in the classroom through an integrated learning approach with the arts. The arts in the classroom does not just refer to physical artwork and projects, it refers to learning techniques that are integrated with the "artist" way of thinking. A big part of this integration has to do with reflection-- a reflection on their work, reflection on each other's work, and reflection about the real world and links they see in learning. This piece of reflecting and connection in learning is one of the reasons behind the desire to provide an integrated outdoor adventure experience to every one of them.
My Project
We have the amazing opportunity to take the whole 8th-grade class to the Sierras in an outdoor adventure program. The program integrates classroom learning with the outdoors, providing experiences our students have never had or likely will not get many chances to have in the future. It makes their learning real and encourages them to think deeply about aspects of the outdoors through journal writing and reflection. At school, we are planning to do an integrated unit to start off the year that directly relates to what they will be studying on the trip (habitats, plant cycles, wellness, etc). This 3-day trip will also be an integral bonding experience for the entire class to have together, so it is planned for late October.
This trip will provide so many new experiences for our students that cannot happen in the classroom.
With very limited resources, we need any help we can get to financially support the trip. Please consider donating- we will be forever thankful.
