Outdoor Hammock Classroom

Help me give my students a hammock garden to read in and an outdoor learning space.

My Project

I teach at a low socio economic public school, however my students this year love to experience new adventures through reading. They love turning on the bistro lights in our classroom and using the comfy chairs to get lost in a good book.

Help me give my students a comfy and peaceful environment to discover books in.

Our school has a pond located on its property and there are many shade trees in the area. While we venture outside for reading time on occasion, this project would give us an area near the pond to sit and read. Through the help of our wood shop class and donations of wood posts, concrete and fixtures we would create a hammock garden where we can hang the hammocks and lay the beach blankets out under the shade trees. Classes could go to the hammock garden to read in the hammocks or on the beach blankets. The area could also be used for an outdoor classroom for students as well.

The idea is that any class could sign up to use the hammock garden by checking out the hammocks. I can see myself using the hammock garden for students to read independently to reach their Accelerated Reading goals. I also see me using the area for reading groups as well as during task cards for grammar and spelling and our journal writing time.
