Our school is a middle school of over 1000 students. Most of our students are from low-income households and have never had an experience with nature or gardens. We have discovered that some of our students do not know from where their food comes. The outdoor garden is an opportunity to experience nature and plants in general. They will also be given responsibility for their own plots. It will allow students to be creative and give them an alternative learning environment.
My Project
Our outdoor garden provides a unique learning environment for our students. The Student Garden Club will be in charge of planning the garden and keeping it up-to-date. They will also take care of the planters in front of our school. Many of our students have no experience with gardening. This will be the chance for our students to learn about nature, be creative, and help create a unique learning environment for our school. In order for this Student Garden Club to be successful we need a storage shed, soil, plants, and gardening tools.
We want our students to get the experience of putting a seed in the ground, tending it, and watching it grow.
One of our students commented that they've always wanted a garden but can't have one because they live in an apartment, so we've shown students how to grow plants in plastic water bottles. Also, students are unfamiliar with many of the plants on which our economy is based, such as cotton. We would like to grow some of these plants to give them practical experience.
All students have access to the garden, and many teachers in our school use it as an alternative classroom. It's a place where students can enjoy the fresh air and have a large space in which to work, particularly lessons that involve several classes at once. Teachers can also schedule lunches for their students in the garden.
Gardening will give our students a sense of pride in both their hard work and in our school.
