Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school believes that literacy is the heart of education. It is so fundamental to learning that its importance in our school cannot be overstated.
My class consists of 24 amazing students.
They are energetic, unique, happy 2nd graders. They come into my classroom with different characteristics, skills and life experiences. These differences help us to build a cohesive and collaborative classroom community. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have learners that are excited and ready to learn!
My Project
Having a garden isn't just about planting seeds, watering them, and watching them grow. The best way to keep a garden growing throughout the years is to connect the garden to Science and Reading Standards. When teachers tie the Science and Reading Standards to the garden, it becomes an Outdoor Classroom, one that will inspire students for years to come.
We are ready to create a standards-based, sustainable outside area that connects standards to an outdoor experience.
There are many ways for teachers to connect science to the garden classroom. Students can learn about soil and function, adaptations, weather, ecosystems, sustainability, and even design and construction. For literacy, students can use the garden to write observation journals, read non-fiction materials, or just have a cozy place that is inviting and relaxing for stress-free and fun reading.
The benches, pergola, planter boxes, garden tools, storage box, and large outdoor games begin the transition into an outdoor classroom. My students will have a place to sit comfortably to write, read, and complete assignments. Being able to do the classwork outside means my students get to breathe fresh air and enjoy the sunshine. When kids are relaxed and having fun, they are open to learning. It is our hope that with a garden classroom we can create and inspire our students to achieve.
