Help me give my students some outdoor picnic tables for our outdoor classroom.
Our school is located in the heart of South DeKalb County, Georgia. The school has educated generations of neighborhood children in the surrounding community. The faculty and staff are honored to serve our students and their families. Our theme is “You can’t hide that Tiger P.R.I.D.E!” P.R.I.D.E. is an acronym that means Protecting Rigorous Instruction Daily with Excellence. We want our teachers to spend as much time teaching as possible. We also want our students to spend as much time learning as possible. At TES we have three PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Support) expectations for all Faculty, Staff and Students: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, & Be a Team Player. We are excited about the possibilities of PBIS to improve our school climate. Our school is a Title I school, which is a federal program that provides financial assistance to local school systems and schools to support the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. Therefore, as a Title I school we need additional funds and opportunities to help our students master learning and social skills in different settings which will aid in academic support.
The students really need a facelift on their courtyard, which would be their Outdoor Classroom. The picnic tables, that we are ordering will be used for the students to sit in groups to complete their assignments. Also, the tables will be available for them to enjoy lunch and learn activities outside when necessary. Having an Outdoor Classroom setting will assist our learning and stewardship activities that students will come to understand that their schoolyard microcosm reflects global environmental issues. Proximity to the surrounding neighborhood often leads to service learning projects that emphasize social involvement and responsibility. Also, accessibility to the outdoor classroom provides opportunities for out-of-school time programming and high visibility and interest encourages local volunteerism. Although some students thrive in a text-based environment, others will benefit from a more experiential approach. For example, students where reading is not prioritized at home – those that comprise the so-called Achievement Gap – may contribute more in the Outdoor Classroom.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
