My Students
Our language immersion program is part of one of the largest middle schools in town. Students in our program receive their core classes either in Spanish, French, and starting this year in Mandarin.
The population in the immersion program is very diverse, composed of hard-working, talented, and very resilient individuals.
They are the core of what makes our program unique.
Some facts about our school are that 84 % of students receive free or reduced lunch and 74% have been classified as economically disadvantaged students. The school has a population of 73.6 % African Americans, 13.8 % Hispanics, 10% Whites, 1.6% Asians, 0.08% Native Americans. Additionally, the English Language Learners students represent 15% of our school population.
My Project
Many of our students live in a food desert area with few available and affordable fresh food which results in a lack of healthy eating habits for the students and their families.
By understanding the nutritional value of the vegetables and fruits harvested by their own hands, students will develop a deeper appreciation for fresh food and healthy nutrition.
The first phase is the creation of the Outdoor Urban Garden Classroom in which the language immersion program students will be taught through hands-on, project-based methods about seed sprouting, vegetable gardens, hydroponics, healthy nutrition, sustainability, self-responsibility, and instill an appreciation for natural resources all through the practical application of academic concepts. The tools listed in our proposal will be used by the students themselves to build raised garden beds as well as a hydroponic system.
