Do you remember when you were a child spending all day outside playing and exploring? Did you spend time roaming through the woods or playing in a creek? A lot of our students do not have the ability to do much outdoor exploration because of where they live. Most of them live in crowded apartments.
Our school is a high poverty school with a high minority population.
They face many challenges at school and at home on a daily basis. Many are 2 or 3 years below grade level academically. Many are home alone after school and are required to take care of themselves and younger siblings with no help on homework. Most of the families are very hard workers trying to provide a better life for their children.
My Project
I have requested several items to help us get our outdoor classroom started; several magnifiers to study items up close, an orienteering kit, rock and mineral collections, and a portable weather station. Right now we have a beautiful area with tables and a few plants, but not much else. With these new resources we can help our students explore and learn in the outdoors in a motivating, hands-on way. They will be able to enjoy the fresh outdoor air and have fun learning and discovering. This will also hopefully help to instill a life-long appreciation of the outdoors.
Our outdoor classroom can be used for the whole school, so hundreds of students will be impacted.
The outdoor classroom also opens up many possibilities for community involvement and parental involvement which is so important.
