Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse homes and support systems. Many lack a consistent structure that promotes positive relationships with education as well as how to be a productive member of a community. With that, they still show up and are motivated to learn and gain insight about is possible for their futures. Teaching goes far beyond a "curriculum" and requires a lot of heart and patience which is what I try to bring to the classroom everyday. My goal with my students is to increase self-confidence both academically and personally. To do so, I focus on fostering an independent learning environment that encourages the students to be responsible, accountable, interactive with one another, and advocates for themselves. I try to impress upon them that whatever situation they come from does not define them and a solid education is the key to their future.
My Project
Students need hands-on experiences in and outside of the classroom. This kit will allow students an experience that increases their technological literacy and allows them to engage in engineering type activities. Through real-world activities, students are able to work on problem-solving skills through open-ended challenges that require them to think logically and come up with and implement a plan. Through the process, students will also build their skills related to teamwork, collaboration, communication, and creative thinking. Specifically through this experience, students will learn about the biomedical engineering field and how it is used to improve healthcare. They will use the knowledge learned to design an antiviral that blocks a virus to limit the spread of infections. Students will also learn about epidemics and how when it spreads quickly and across countries and continents, it becomes a pandemic.
