I work in a public school in Norfolk with children from all socioeconomic groups as well as academic levels. My reading and writing students are hard workers and love to learn! In my class, we focus on authentic learning - actual reading with diverse, challenging, and intriguing texts.
This year will be my first year teaching reading and writing to 5th graders!
I plan to incorporate a variety of literature circles and novel studies during our reading block. Text selection is extremely important. It is vital that the texts are diverse, current, challenging, and captivating.
My Project
We will use a variety of comprehension strategies to discuss elements of the novels, as well as grow our vocabulary using context clues within the text.
Students deserve diverse, current, and captivating reading material!
With these books, I plan to hold literature circles and novel studies based on student reading levels. In a typical literature circle, each student would have a specific role, which would change weekly. After an introductory lesson, students will read the assigned selection independently while completing their weekly role. Each group will meet twice a week to have student led discussions about the selection and allow students to share their work. We will also incorporate the use of Google Classroom to help make our literature circles paperless!
