My students from San Francisco are active, critical thinkers and come to school eager to learn! They thrive when they work together in collaborative groups and do so on a regular basis. They come from immigrant, working class families that work multiple jobs to make ends meet. Many students in my classroom have mentioned that they do not have their own space to study or read a book at home.
Every student has the right to learn and work in a comfortable learning environment with options for seating.
We are a public elementary school in California, offering various opportunities and experiences for the student body, such as a strong focus on academics, a music program, enriching field trips, and art classes. However, our school, like all schools in California, has been hit hard by the enormous budget cuts statewide. We are working to keep up the quality of education and the school experience with much fewer resources. When asked what keeps me teaching and motivated at my school site, I always say it is because of the amazing students and families that I get to work with on a regular basis. They all deserve a quality educational experience!
My Project
Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to take charge of their own learning environment. During independent and collaborative group work times, students can decide where they can do their best learning. Currently, my students are sitting and working at desks that are over 20 years old, outdated and/or not size appropriate. Students use the space and materials that we currently have, such as clipboards, existing desks, and limited rug space. Many have expressed feeling more comfortable sitting on the floor while they complete their classroom tasks. Making sure that students are comfortable in their learning environment at school is very important, as many of them do not have a regular space to do so at home.
My students enjoy working together and are more productive when they are given the choice of where to work in the classroom.
They understand that they are making the choice for themselves, and that is a great motivation for them to stay focused on their independent and group projects.
The products that I have selected will give my students more seating options in the classroom. The Portable Lap Desks will allow students to sit on the floor or in a seat but still have a workable desk space. The Neolounge Chairs will give students the opportunity to sit lower to the ground and use lower desk areas. The Resin Activity Table will be beneficial for both collaborative group work and independent work. I am excited to see how flexible seating in the classroom will continue to help my students to grow an even more effective learning space!
