Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 800 students in grades K-8 who come from a high poverty/low income neighborhood, and one of the most historic in the city. One hundred percent of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Softball is a sport which began five years ago, with the dedication of a fifth grade teacher who wanted to provide opportunities for student athletes.
Our students do not have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities and there is a small budget to fund sports. We enjoy hearing from former students who have made varsity teams in high school and into college. In addition, we know students build confidence in team sports and work cooperatively with others through team sports.
We are proud to offer team sports to fifth through eighth grades after school.
My Project
Our sports teams are made up of dedicated teachers who volunteer more than just their time after school to coach sports like softball. These teachers also worked to get the basic materials needed for practices, such as balls, gloves and bats when creating team sports five years ago.
The materials in this project will replace the used balls and gloves the softball team currently uses, which were donated because friends and family members of our coaches wanted to help provide students with opportunities to participate in team sports.
We make it work with the resources we have and what we have been able to gather, but after time the equipment gets worn out due to normal wear and tear. Due to a limited budget for after school sports activities, it is difficult to buy new gloves for a team all at once. This project allows students to use new equipment, which offers less wear and tear on the old equipment.
