Mrs. Morris from Philadelphia PA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 6 items including a Big View Magnifier, Insects Activity Tub, an Earth and Space Science Game, and three headphones.

We need the tools to compete. We are a struggling demographic with limited funds in this inner city school district. We just do not get the funding that our suburban counterparts do. These children have little access to these types of supplies unless it is offered in the classroom. The families of my students are often struggling to provide a home for their children and school supplies therefore do not find their way to the top of the list. Please help a struggling minority that often does not get a fair shake in our inequitable society...If you were to come to this school and meet these children without bookbags, without breakfast, without so many things others take for granted, you would say, "Let's do all we can to help these children who are so appreciate of our help"
My students often come without the basic supplies you would expect to find. Many students come without bookbags or school supplies. Whatever academic supplies they are given come solely from the classroom. They do not benefit from those extra science or fun games other suburban children get weekly from parents and grandparents. These children need our help and are so deserving. If you saw the smiles I get from showing the students a home made volcano or a science experiment, you would see the difference all these games and incentives mean to our kids.
I am asking for hands on science games and manipulatives. The childen LOVE learning about space and insects and using magnifying glasses. All these items will delight my students and engage them to learn about science. Non-fiction is very important in traditional testing such as the PSSA and immersion into the genre would immensely help their success in this regard. We will look at insects, hair, leaves, flowers, etc. and begin an understanding of what cannot be seen easily and how things really look. I also ordered a science game about outer space which I know 9 year olds will just love. They love learning about the planets and hunger for this type of information. I needed a few organizational tools as well for the classroom such as a place to keep construction papers, scissors, crayons, so it is neat and accessible for all our students. I also ordered science kits about insects which is yet another fascinating topic to my third graders. I am hoping this information will help them in their learning of non-fiction and on their writing in the non-fiction genre. These important science items will be used daily and greatly appreciated by my aspiring little scientists.
You will make my students dreams come true if you agree to take on this project. Perhaps sitting in a chair in my classroom right now, is a little 9 year old boy or girl who will someday discover a cure for an illness or develop a theory that may just help our society and it may just begin in that little third grade classroom with all the exciting and engaging science manipulatives and learning they will do... Thank you thank you thank you
