Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are an awesome group of kids that have so much pride for their school and community. This small farming community sits in the middle of the Central Valley, surrounded by agricultural land in all directions.
Most of our students come from low-income households, with limited experiences and resources outside of our small community.
94.6% of our students are Hispanic, second language learners whose parents are field workers. 93% of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch daily.
Our students have a great interest in the world outside of this small community, a desire to learn, and an appreciation for the resources provided to them.
My Project
The project funding would provide my students with weekly magazines that include science and history topics that they are interested in. Articles are written at their specific grade level, with pictures, captions, and questions that explain the topic in detail.
They reinforce essential science lessons with real-world applications.
Each story includes print and digital resources to help me meet my teaching objectives.
The second set of magazines is Scholastic News. These issues include authentically written journalism about current topics and events in our world. Magazines arrive in monthly bundles that are written specifically for our grade level. These articles get students excited about reading, helps build literacy skills, and encourages students to become informed active citizens.
