Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low socio-economic background. I work with all the ESL students taking Geometry. Half of my students have a limited English proficiency and many are new to the country within the past year or two. They arrive in the United States from various countries with different educational backgrounds.
My students are thirsty to learn new mathematical material.
In most cases, they are Hispanic and from families in which neither parent graduated high school. The students want to climb the social ladder in the United States by not only finishing high school, but also preparing for post-secondary readiness whether in a trade or college atmosphere.
My Project
The calculators I am requesting already have a home. They will be used during each mathematical class 187 days a year. The donations in this project will help students complete many types of mathematical concepts in class. It will help them apply mathematical processes to 'real world' application.
Having a calculator in math class is a basic need.
The students I work with were heavily impacted by Hurricane Harvey so it is difficult for them to provide their own calculator. By having a calculator in class, their ability to complete tasks will be elevated. This will help jumpstart and continue their thought process in mathematics.
