Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an energetic, inquisitive, and enthusiastic group of 26 seven and eight year-olds in the inner city of Providence, Rhode Island. My second graders are always eager to come to school and love to read, write and problem solve in such thoughtful and creative ways! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class.
Many of my students have special needs and also special talents so we learn so much from each other.
My school is working hard to build community among families and staff, and we have a safe, respectful environment.
My Project
We do not want learning to stop at the classroom door. We want to expand our curriculum into the outdoor environment and these kits are exactly what we need. The Out and About Art Kit provides a variety of learning experiences that will enable students the opportunities to practice curricular concepts in a fun, hands-on way. A child who can think creatively, outside of the box, and without self-imposed curricula excels in school and life. The art kit and all activities will encourage children to express themselves creatively unrestricted by conventional ideas of art while they are outside.
Exploring music and rhythm helps to develop balance, spatial awareness, and whole body/brain integration.
In addition, exercising with cross laterals is powerfully connected to cognitive growth and reading readiness. The Out and About Music Kit will allow students to build brain power by incorporating some of the activities they love the most (music and movement) with fresh air and socializing!
If we were so fortunate to be fully funded for this project and had these wholesome, yet innovative kits, our time outside the classroom door would be productive, meaningful and a fun way to explore and appreciate the environment. And that’s just what all young children need!
