My students live in a diverse Hawaii community. I currently teach second grade in a Title I school. Some of my students come from struggling family backgrounds and school is a safe positive place for them. As a teacher in this community, it's a challenge to meet the diverse needs of each learner but always humbling to see the growth in every child.
I would really like for my students to be able to work with art, toys, and manipulatives in language arts, math, and science so that they can be engaged in their developmental level, problem solve, visualize, move, and build their academic knowledge as well as social and peer interaction and communication skills in a positive way.
My Project
I am preparing for the aftermath of COVID-19 when the children go back to school. I'm sure our spring break goodbyes, school cancelations, stress, and the looming uncertainty will change all of us in many ways and new "changed children" will enter the classroom when we return.
During uncertain times such as these, where children may be experiencing anxiety or worry, fostering social-emotional skills can help support their immediate coping needs and their long term well being.
I would like read-aloud books to enhance the social-emotional curriculum that will help us learn how to identify our feelings and the appropriate coping strategies. These stories talk about various breathing and positive self-talk strategies that will help us address our feelings in appropriate ways. The glitter wand and markers are further tools for calming our thoughts and emotions. The magnet bookshelf will store these special books so the students can grab them any time to read or look at.
Social-emotional learning is the process of developing self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success, according to the Committee For Children. Research shows that people with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges, create and maintain positive relationships, and problem solve in productive ways.
