My students need a few more copies of the classic play Our Town by Thornton Wilder so that we can have a complete class set. This way each student can have their own physical copy.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are awesome. They come from a diverse set of backgrounds and situations but they are good kids. We have a few military families, some upper-middle-class families, single-parent families, large families, etc. I have classes full of athletic students, motivated students, bookworms, struggling readers, non-native speakers, etc. We have nice neighborhoods surrounding us, rural communities, strip malls, access to a major city with a major university, and public housing in our district. I like to think we are a typical American middle school with typical American teenagers.
My Project
Our students read this classic play, Our Town by Thornton every year as a part of our American Dream unit. This is a text that connects our ELA content with the social studies content that students study in the 8th grade. My students generally enjoy the play but every year a few of them fall in love with it.
It would be really special if each student could hold a physical copy of the script while reading and discussing in class.
These copies will comprise a class set that will also be shared with other 8th grade ELA teachers at the school. These copies will reach over 300 8th grade students every year.
