My students at BES are excited to be back in the classroom after months of learning from home since last March. Our children are resilient and ready to learn, even though our situation changes frequently during this pandemic. During hybrid learning, the students have to learn to distance, wear their masks, and still engage in learning activities throughout the school day. Our students come from a majority of low-income households and often their most positive interactions of the day come from seeing their teachers. We may not be able to see their little faces, but their excitement beams through when they see us face to face in the classroom and on Zoom when they are working from home.
My Project
I am asking to receive Nearpod Gold Annual Subscriptions for the school library and for the K-1 teachers in my school. The subscriptions will allow us to access the Nearpod software and thousands of lessons and activities in their database. Nearpod is special software that makes any lesson interactive and engaging for the students. Instead of just viewing a Google Slides or Powerpoint presentation passively, this software provides opportunities for the students to interact with the lesson and show what they know. They can answer questions, make predictions, play matching games, and other methods of formative assessment so that the teacher knows if the students understand, and when to move on in the lesson. Nearpod can be used in person and remotely by students in teacher-led, student-paced, or for at-home assessment.
When students have a chance to interact with what they are learning, they are more likely to retain the information and get excited about the lesson!
Our students love answering polls and getting to have a turn typing in their responses and sharing out with the rest of their class. With Nearpod, both the students at home and the students in the room will be able to see each other's responses and feel like they are all together in the classroom. It's a challenge to be the students at home when other students are in the classroom, and this will help our students feel like they are still part of the class.
