This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 6th through 12th grade students are redefining possible at our charter school in Texas. Many come from low-income families and struggle with a variety of issues before they even walk into the classroom. As a Reading Intervention teacher and the school’s librarian, I’ve seen all of our students embrace a whatever-it-takes attitude to ensure their personal literary growth.

They are hard-working, determined individuals with a desire to attend college; many would be the first to do so in their family.

Our goal as a school is to provide rigorous curriculum, build meaningful student relationships, and provide experiences outside of the classroom as we prepare them for college and beyond.

My Project

Providing students with a variety of engaging and interesting books is a proven method in creating and sustaining proficient readers. Students have the opportunity to choose and check out which books they want to read, and are given ample time in class every day to dive into their books, uninterrupted. Our 6th – 12th grade students have come a long way from thinking they won’t fall in love with reading, and I am always out to prove them wrong!

So far, they crave more of the popular YA series at our campus library and are excited to talk about what they read from the selection we have available.

Our goal is to finish all the sets we currently have in order to keep our students’ momentum. To truly fall in love with reading, students need access to lots of books; books that are exciting, scary, funny, and leave them wanting more I want them to read what interests them and develop a joy for literature!
