Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are amazing. They are diverse in every way imaginable. They are bright, inquisitive, energetic, outgoing, friendly, thoughtful, and reflective.

My students live in an economically disadvantaged area. It is a working class neighborhood, and many of the parents do not speak English. More than 50% of our students received free or reduced lunch. Many parents do not have the time, resources, education, or language skills to assist their children in the learning process. Although all parents want their children to succeed, the means to that end are not always readily available. The students are kind, inquisitive, and bright, and excited about learning!

Our school is becoming a STEAM academy. It is not always easy to incorporate the Math and Science aspect into our English class, but this will enable us to incorporate technology and art. In a way, we will be engineering our own messages by producing them, too. This project will showcase our writing and ideas in a way that is interesting and different than other published pieces. It solves the problem of how to include STEAM projects into English. It also make the class much more engaging and fun because WE get to create our own videos to share our ideas and life stories!

In Their Own Words

There are several different ways we will use these Chrome books to share our stories. First, we want to write and create short memoirs for various times in our lives. We will create slides that illustrate and explain our memoirs. Then, we will use a movie editing app to string together all of the memoirs to create a movie of chronological memoirs. Additionally, each student will chose a memoir that best represents his or her personal story, which will be used to create a movie of class memoirs. We will also write, create, record Public Service Announcements to share our beliefs about a topic, after working on argument essays. This is another way to share our truths through our words and chosen visuals. The video element will allow us to share our ideas and thoughts with others while practicing our speaking and communication skills. Creating these will allow us to share our stories in front of others comfortably.

We will write, edit, and direct our own movies. These movies will convey our life stories, our opinions, and our beliefs. This project, in itself, is one in which each student gets to take a leadership role in order to produce a movie that represents who they are and what they believe! It promotes leadership skills while remaining relevant and interesting.
