Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood. Often times, their own parents are not able to read and write. Our student population is ethnically diverse. The majority of students are second language learners. This is a group of students that walk to school early for a hot breakfast and stay after school for hot lunch.
In transitional kindergarten, every day is a new, high energy adventure!
My passion is teaching young children. I have 24 five-year-old students that come to school to learn, but also to be loved and nurtured. No matter what comes their way, they always have a smile on their faces when I open our classroom door. My daily goal is to make sure they walk out the door excited to share with their family what they have done that day.
My Project
Cutting is an essential fine motor & life skill. Most of the children in my class have never held scissors until they come to school. Students begin learning how to use scissors the very first week of school. Each child in my class needs a pair of functional scissors. As a tool, they need to be ergonomic to promote proper handling skills, while also being durable enough to cut anything from PlayDoh to cardboard.
We use scissors each and every day in TK.
Learning to cut can be a challenge for a typical child, but if a child has any special needs, cutting can be impossibly frustrating. Having a few types of adaptive scissors allows ALL children the opportunity to learn to cut.
