This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in the Englewood community, but my students travel from all over the city to come here. My students are 70% African American and 25% Hispanic, and over 69% of them are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students have been enrolling at some of the most selective institutions and we want to recognize their hard work.
While we cannot afford to recognize every post-secondary institution with a college flag, this will be the beginning of a great tradition at our school.
My Project
Our school is the only selective enrollment high school located in the Englewood community. We currently enroll 97% of students in post-secondary institutions with a 92% persistence rate, the highest rate in Chicago Public Schools. Once a year we recognize all students for an all-school assembly and distribute certificates to recognize students, however, there is nothing left behind to display to future students for inspiration.
While we have such a strong college-going culture at LMSA, we want to recognize the most competitive and highly selective institutions with individual college flags.
The goal is to display the college flags around the junior and senior hallways to inspire all students to reach their full potential to eventually attend one of those selective institutions. In addition, LMSA will continue the legacy of excellence by establishing a tradition of adding new college flags once students enroll at new post-secondary institutions. We ultimately want to recognize the hard work of all of our students.
