Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a school that serves children from Pre-k to 2nd grade. Our students come from the poorest sections of Boston. Many of them are homeless and live in shelters.
Our students have experienced a significant trauma in their lives.
School is a place where they find safety and comfort. I am always amazed by how much they love school and miss it when vacations come.
Our students are working hard to learn how to treat each other every day.
My Project
At our school, students earn stamps for showing respect, responsibility, and stamina in all areas of study. These are the core values of our school and all students are taught about them. We teach students what these values mean in the bathroom, the classroom and at recess. Every Friday students bring their stamps to the school store where they get to shop. Students look forward to shopping day all week.
We have fidget spinners, bubbles, pencils, erasers and other small toys.
Many of the toys we offer like playdough and slime help with anxiety and calming. Students can also shop for time with a special adult in the building. Our principal makes milk and cookies which are also a favorite.
We have found that students' behavior has improved in all areas since we started our positive behavior model and our school store. Students feel good about what they have accomplished and love the feeling of having earned their prize with hard work.
