Our School Library Is LIT! Empowering Readers Through Diversity Part 2
Help me give my students diverse library books that reflects the world around them. These books are part of the Project LIT Community selections that promotes reading, and empowers readers and leaders within the community.
My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students in grades 6-8. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis.
One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.
Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that will help ensure all of my students have books in order find their love for reading.
My Project
My school has a very diverse population, but they don't always have access to books that have diverse characters that represent themselves. Having access to these materials is such an important aspect in education because research actually shows that being exposed to people that are different from us actually helps reduce stereotypes. Our students can't always be exposed to all the diverse groups in society in their everyday life, but they can be introduced to them through literature.
Every student should feel like they are important and deserve to be able to choose books that have characters that represents themselves--These books are part of the annual Project LIT Community, which is a literacy movement empowering readers and leaders in hundreds of schools & communities across the country.
Through these books and literacy movement, they will be able to learn how to cope with things they are dealing with in their own lives and the lives of others around them. It is so important for our students to see that diversity is an amazing thing and we are all important and special. Diversity includes not only different ethnicities, but also various facets such as culture, gender, and social groups. Having access to books that approaches these topics will enrich my students' lives by bringing the world to them.
