I teach music at a Title I school in suburban South Carolina. The students make up 40 classes in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, including special ed, regular ed, and gifted students. Many of these students come from low-income families and they rely on teachers or the school for their materials. All of my students love new experiences. They are always eager to get involved in learning. Our mascot is the “Busy Bee” and we certainly stay busy trying to make every moment count in music class!
Rhythm instruments are essential to the curriculum in an elementary music classroom.
Rhythm and steady beat are the foundations for many concepts taught in my classroom. Our sand blocks are so worn down that they don't even sound like sand blocks anymore. Some of our caxixi (woven basket rattles) have started to unravel after constant use. We need to replace these old materials with new quality ones. These are instruments that students in all of my classes use on a weekly basis. No matter what music standard we are covering in class, steady beat is always a part of the lesson. The instruments requested in this proposal, will be used by students to learn about, practice, and demonstrate mastery of steady beat. Once this foundation is laid, these instruments can also be used to teach students about more advanced rhythmic concepts like divided beat, syncopation, beat vs. rhythm, etc.
