This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students who attend this school come from a very high poverty part of town. They live in a town steeped in civil rights history and try to do all they can to gain the education necessary to reach their full potential. They do not have access to many cultural experiences, and books are their window to the world around them. Many of them have never been out of the county we live in and do not have the experiences afforded by others.
My Project
These tables and chairs will replace the ones we have that are broken and not repairable. Our furniture is over 50 years old and in very rough shape. The tables and chairs are adult sized as well. All of these factors make it hard for the students to use and get comfortable.
Students cannot learn if they are worried about their chair breaking and the table is too high.
They constantly are fidgeting around and the younger students have to put their feet in the chair under them to work at the table.
It is time for these students to have furniture that is safe and sized for them!
