Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am teaching 29 first grade students in an over-crowded, inner city, public school in Newark, New Jersey. Although many of my students are bilingual, my class does not receive federal funding. I receive a mere $80.00 each year to spend on instructional materials and learning tools.

The parents of my students are supportive and value education, however, many speak limited English and cannot supply the necessary help and guidance with reading and homework at home. Several of my students do not have home computers or books to practice reading skills. My project goal is to give my students a comfortable and inviting place in the classroom to read. I want to instill in them a love for reading, and have them realize that reading can be an enjoyable experience.

The three bean bag seats, that I am requesting, would be a great start to the creation of our "Literary Lounge." I plan to add a colorful rug, other types of seating, and new book collections in the near future.

Reading is the most important subject in school. If a child can read, he/she can learn to do anything! The sky is the limit! This is your opportunity to help my young, grade one children get on the "reading track!" Let's catch them early and encourage reading by creating this special "Literary Lounge" in the classroom where students can practice their reading skills!
