My Students

All students in Grades 4-6 participate in a recorder program as part of their regular Music curriculum. This year I am expanding the program to include Grades 7-8. We have always played soprano recorders. I would like to expand our program to now include alto recorders.

We are a public K-8 school of over 400 students.

I see my kids twice a week for 30 minutes each time. The younger kids always get excited in 3rd grade, because they "get to play recorder next year." My recorder program is strong and I would like to make it more exciting by adding alto recorders to the program.

My Project

Many elementary students learn to play the recorder because it is a great first-step to playing a musical instrument. I would like the opportunity to enrich our program to include these alto recorders. Having these instruments will allow us to play 2-part and 3 part music.

The discipline required to become proficient with an instrument (through daily practice) and the ability to successfully be part of a group (such as an ensemble) are important skills learned a music class.

This same discipline and team-building are also life skills applicable in many arenas of life. I want to help my students attain these qualities while hopefully creating a life-long love of music.
