Our Reading Rainbow

My students need the opportunity to fall in love with reading while getting to use new books, and a title that they can relate to on a first hand basis.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students make up an amazing community of vibrant culture, creativity and imagination. They also make up one of the most underprivileged schools in our city. Their neighborhoods have the most crime, and many of them have experienced more trauma by the age of 13 than most people will experience in their entire lives. The school itself doesn't have a lot of PTA involvement, and the students shouldn't lose opportunities, based on a lack of funding. Let's help these kids reach their full potential!

My Project

I truly believe that these books will change my students' lives. This novel is written like none other they have ever read. Just because they are high risk students in a poverty stricken neighborhood doesn't mean they shouldn't have the same opportunities and resources as wealthier schools. This novel takes a look at their own lives in so many ways, and it will help answer questions they struggle with personally. It will open up an avenue for discussion on tough issues, and it will encourage and develop the beginning of a love of reading! I truly believe that having the ability to purchase these books will inspire a genuine love for literature and resonate something new within their lives personally and academically.
