My Students

We are an Early Childhood building serving children 3 years old through first grade. We are Title I school and live in a rural community. Many of our children also suffer trauma from living in poverty, divorce, parents in prison, etc. We are working to provide our students with self regulation skills and social emotional skills they may not have.

We would like to give all of our students the skills to work thru their trauma and exhibit self-regulation in and out of school.

One way we will build these skills is through the avenue of a sensory path. Our students are are at all different levels in their development; physically, academically, socially and emotionally.

We desire for them to see themselves as the strong, bright and creative children they are. Being able to self-regulate independently will help them in this journey.

My Project

Many of our students need to be able to do movement activities to help them self-regulate themselves in order to continue to focus on learning tasks. We need to be able to offer students ways to self-regulate themselves independently. By offering children sensory paths throughout our building, they may step outside their room, perform a quick sensory activity then go right back to learning.

If a student becomes frustrated or just needs to move they will be able to let the teacher know they are going out to one of the sensory paths close to their room, perform the activity then come back and get to work.

No one loses control and the other children don't have to stop their learning. Also, the teacher gets to keep teaching.
