Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students face a number of challenges each and every day in their community, but that doesn't stop them from wanting to come to school and be challenged even more. My students are always looking to be engaged and to be as prepared as possible for their future. If my students are up to this challenge, I better be as well!
My students are looking for a safe space where they can be themselves and let their true selves shine.
If they're that willing to be open and carefree, I need to find ways to challenge them at their individual levels and keep them interested in taking charge of their learning.
While a number of my students may have learning differences, they're not about to let that stop them, or even slow them down for that matter. They look forward to school and see it as a place where they can grow as a student and as a person. As one of their teachers, I think that it's pretty special that this huge responsibility (and opportunity) is put on my shoulders.
My Project
It's an exciting time at Little Village Academy! We are in the process of building a STEAM lab from the ground up. While this is an awesome undertaking, it also means a lot of work to ensure the lab is outfitted with everything the students would need.
We want to ensure that our students have everything they need to experience all things STEAM.
By exploring with electronics (circuitry, wiring, switchboards), design (3D printing, prototyping) and technology (video game building, coding), our students will get a glimpse into real-world learning experiences which are all around them.
Allowing our students to explore this field and providing them with learning opportunities that will set them up for success in the future, is exactly what we're hoping to accomplish with our lab. Being these learning opportunities aren't a one-size-fits-all type of model, giving the students a number of choices and opportunities (which we will be able to through the materials in this project) is crucial to catching their interest.
