This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an early childhood special education classroom in a school district in a low-income neighborhood. Being a self-contained classroom, it is low in number but high in need for support. There can be up to five students enrolled in this classroom, each requiring adult assistance to get basic needs met.
Each child that enters my classroom is delayed in several domains.
Students that enter this classroom are often delayed in their verbal skills, self-help skills, physical skills, and cognitive skills. Children learn through basic sign language, songs, movement, visuals, and play.
My Project
Many of my students struggle to hold tools including scissors, pencils, and eating utensils. Most new students start the year requiring hand-over-hand assistance in order to eat. Majority of my students use a full-fist grasp and pinch with all five of their fingers. Every student on my caseload receives occupational therapy minutes as a part of their Individualized Education Plan.
The materials included in this project will give my students teacher-guided activities as well as independent activities to develop crucial fine-motor skills.
Having thirty to sixty minutes a week of individual support with an occupational therapist sets my students up for success, but when I am able to incorporate similar supports into my daily structure, my student's fine motor skills thrive!
