My students need the new books that came out in 2016 to perform a "Mock Newbery" contest and analyze these books to determine which book should win the coveted Newbery award.
My students have crossed the bridge from learning how to read over to reading to learn. Across that bridge is also the threat of getting older and with that comes worry. Lots of worry. I see boys and girls begin to worry about their appearance, worry about what others will think of them, worry about grades, worry about changes in their bodies, worry about their friends and worry about their family life. Do they always verbalize these worries? No. Do they often feel alone? Yes.
Daily reading engagement is crucial to my students' school success.
This is when a book can make a student not feel so alone. Through the characters in a book, kids realize that they are not the only one worrying about their friends, their grade, their family or their identity. Books give these kids valuable validation.
Sadly, not all kids have access to good books. Time is limited and having these books at their fingertips is crucial.
My Project
Donations to this project will give my students new books that look appealing to students and motivate them to read. It has been proven that students that are engaged in reading have a higher rate of success versus their peers that do not often engage in reading. American students love competition, so why not capitalize on that?
I plan to use these materials to create a mock Newbery Award contest within my classroom.
Students will read and analyze the books from 2016 that are being looked at for the (real) Newbery. Then they will decide for themselves which one deserves the coveted prize. Students will analyze the books and look for ways the books are distinguished based on topic, character, style and theme.
When the real Newbery awards come out in January 2017, students will already be invested in learning the results, as well as invested in reading these highly acclaimed pieces of literature.
Your donation helps students not only in the 2016-2017 school year discover a love of reading, but also helps kids in my classroom for many years to come.
Thank you for reading as well as your support in public education!
