I teach an active, creative, curious group of children ranging from PrK-2nd grade. My classroom is considered a Mixed Abilities room. Therefore, my students have a wide range of needs and skills. I have children with multiple disabilities such as vision, physical and intellectual. I have multiple children with varying degrees of Autism. Because of our varied needs, we approach learning and life skills a little differently. Academically, my students are working on a wide range of skills from matching colors and shapes to beginning reading and addition. Every child has strengths and interest that must be tapped into to help reach their potential. I work in an amazing school that values inclusive practices. We work very hard for every child to have the same opportunities that their peers have.
I love my job, my school and my students!
My Project
While it may look like play, my students will be learning non stop with this KidKraft Dollhouse and Fisher Price family figurines.
Most early language acquisition centers around the students home and family.
Therefore my Speech and Language Pathologist can use the dollhouse and family figurines to facilitate verbalization and language development in a way that is meaningful for each child. Students will work on categorizing what furniture goes into each room as well as naming household items. The SLP and I have already brainstormed ideas for communication pages and communication books to incorporate these tools. Students will improve fine motor skills by visually organizing the rooms as well as manipulating the pieces.
Many of my students struggle with trauma and/or self esteem issues. With this playhouse we can role play, conduct play therapy and problem solve social and emotional issues. Children need hands on experiences to work thru many social development stages.
Students will use the dollhouse and family figurines both during structured center time as well as free choice time.
