I work in a wonderful School-wide Title I school in a low income community. Our school is full of hard working staff that are dedicated to insuring the best for all of our students. I teach in a departmentalized grade level, teaching math, science and social studies to two homerooms. Our classroom is a full inclusion classroom, so students have a wide range of abilities and strengths.
Due to the diversity of needs in the classroom, the students have benefited greatly from small group differentiated math instruction at their levels.
Because of this wide range of learning capabilities, my classroom needs a variety of resources to make sure I am able to provide them with whole group and small group instruction that will help them to grow and succeed at their individual levels. Our students love learning and are engaged by using a variety hands on materials, technology and differentiated resources.
My Project
Who says math practice has to be boring? Our students have been working hard to prepare for state testing. I want to provide them with a fun and engaging way to review important math concepts with a Glow in the Dark themed math day. State testing can be a stressful time and many of our students also come to school with stresses from home on their minds. I want to provide for them a fun day where they can be fully immersed in engaging Glow in the Dark math activities.
I plan to have a Glow in the Dark Math day where students can have fun working together with their peers regardless of their ability levels and at the same time review important math skills in an engaging way and strengthen their love of learning.
Some of the fun activities students will be able to participate in include: solving multiple step word problems on neon plastic plates, matching equations and answers on neon cups, solving problems involving multiplication, division, area, and perimeter using glow in the dark pebbles, and using glow sticks as manipulatives to act out word problems.
These activities will come to life in our classroom with black lights, neon materials, and glow in the dark resources. Students will be able to leave the stresses of state testing behind and focus just on being kids and having fun while learning. The experience will help foster positive feelings about math and learning and students of all ability levels will be able to work together with these Glow in the Dark resources. Students will be fully engaged in activities that will help build their confidence in their math abilities.
