In this unit my students will learn about their local community history from the past to the present in accordance with our state standards for social studies. This unit will explore the culture, language, religion, and daily practices of some of the areas first people. Also, the life and environmental science standards will be taught as I teach students about the importance of th local environment, native plants, and animals, to the survival of human life. With the use of the novel Island of the Blue Dolphins my students will learn about a group of early Native Americans who lived on a small island off the coast of Los Angeles. This historical fiction novel is a wonderful learning experience for my students to learn about the human dependency of the natural environment with plants, sea life, other wild life, learn about the system of government that these early Americans lived by, the oral and non oral methods of communication used, and the daily routines of the people. These resources will help to provide these and other meaningful learning experiences that my students will benefit from, not just in my class but in future classes. I would like to purchase the following: set of literature (25 copies) the book on tape literature guide
