My students need 40 independent reading books with titles from "Somewhere in the Darkness" to "Glass" to catch up on their reading skills and become college ready since our library suffered huge losses in a fire.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Disaster struck our high school! Several years ago our library suffered from a terrible fire. Today, our inner-city students don't have access to "fun" books--chapter books, independent reading books, or even a place to read them.

My inner-city students are unique.

They grew up in a community historically known for riots and gang violence, yet my honors classes are my largest classes. They come to our school from all walks of life, but the majority are in foster care, receive free lunch vouchers and told me they aren't getting new school shoes this year. Our school is a comprehensive public high school, yet we do not have a functional library. My avid readers would have to cross several gang territories in order to visit the closest local library. Independent reading books are few and far between.

My Project

Chapter books, chapter books, chapter books!! Remember reading Newberry Medal winners, romantic stories, and adventures to other worlds? C.S. Lewis said, "We read to know we are not alone" and he is right. My students will find heroes in these excellent books, they will find themselves in these texts and best of all they will be better prepared to enter college and the work force--because they will be literate.

Imagine--students who have a friend when days are hard, students who have an escape when the neighborhoods are rough and students who will be so interested in what they are reading that they will succeed and become truly literate.

Our library is gone, but you can give my students shelter, community, and an education; not tomorrow, but today. Please help me create a sanctuary for my kids and give them something great to read.
