This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergartners bounce into the classroom at the beginning of every school year eager to read. Having a collection of books at a variety of emergent and early reading levels is crucial. Seeing the joy of my students immersed in words that they, themselves, can read is priceless!
I teach at a small, high-poverty public school in a rural area of the San Joaquin Valley of California.
My students are eager to learn to read, and, once they begin reading, they do not want to stop. They want books, books, books, and more books. They read to each other at school, go to the office and read to the principal, read to their parents at home--and even read to their pets and stuffed animals. Their reading appetites are insatiable.
My Project
The set of 30 leveled books that I am requesting is designed to work with the children's growing reading skills. Beginning with the simple, highly-patterned books in Level 1, and progressing step by step through more and more challenging levels, the books grow with children, providing success, which, of course, engenders more success. These simple books will be the stepping stones these kindergartners need to propel them into the wonderful world of independent reading with its fantasy and fun, its adventure and joy.
