Our school is a Title I school and is located in Murfreesboro, TN. Over 70% of our student population are on free or reduced-price lunch. We use the Leader in Me philosophy to help develop a culture of leadership by teaching, modeling, and practicing Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We believe in differentiating instruction by integrating leadership language into our daily instruction as we help our students become the best readers, writers, thinkers, and LEADERS they can be!
My students are eager to learn and appreciate the extra support that they receive to help close their learning gaps.
I am an Academic Interventionist and the students that I serve range from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I meet with these students in small groups and we focus on areas of deficit. Students receive reading and/or math Intervention. We work on learning new strategies so that they can better access grade level curriculum. They work very hard and have to put in more time and effort than typical peers due to their deficits.
My Project
I am an Academic Interventionist and work with Tier 3 students that have difficulty in Reading. These students are not reading on their grade level and need intense instruction in their deficit areas. Working with all grade levels, there are a wide variety of reading skills that are taught. My younger readers need extra support with phonics instruction and struggle with sight word recognition. The CVC unifix cubes and the additional activities used with the CVC cubes will give students the opportunity to practice decoding and spelling of closed syllable words. The sight word readers will give students books to practice reading sight words within text. For the older students, I have selected high interest leveled readers to help them with fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The Time for Kids Comprehension Test books will help to better prepare my struggling readers with Reading Comprehension. By purchasing leveled readers, games, and manipulatives to support their learning, I will provide my students with opportunities to practice and improve their reading skills.
The students in my small groups would greatly benefit from the funding for a variety of books to increase their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
The use of connected text alongside the hands-on activities will encourage an active engagement in their learning.
