Students in my classroom come from fifteen, different, Native American tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota and Nebraska. They live nine months of every year at school, with little to no contact with their families. They come from a variety of home lives but are at our school with the hope of a brighter future. Many of my students have become accustomed to not having the newest resources or technology, but they still persevere.
Within a few months of being in my classroom, they learn that they can achieve things that many thought they never would.
They are reading harder books (sometimes even their first chapter book), doing harder math problems and are able to do their own research on things that interest them.
My Project
My students work hard and play hard like most typical 9-11 year olds do. Because they can get rambunctious many resources such as printed games and task cards can take a beating. With a laminator in our classroom we would be able to preserve these games and task cards so they not only make it through our lesson this year, but hopefully years to come! We had a small laminator in our classroom until today, when it was recalled! Ironically in the past few weeks I had been looking at bigger ones, as all of our projects didn't fit through the one we had, but I decided we needed to make due with what we had. Now it is gone!
In addition to laminating items for class I want to be able to laminate keepsakes and pictures for my students.
Because they don't live at home those little things are cherished even more and they want to keep them nice until they can take them home to their families, sometimes many months later. It is these small things that mean the world to a kid!
