Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten in a high-need area. The majority of my students come into my classroom not knowing the letters of the alphabet, their shapes, how to count to 10, or how to write their first name. More than half of my students do not have books in their home...but my students love a good story!
Read them a story with inflection in your voice and a few different character voices and they will listen oh-so-quietly that you will swear you could hear a pin drop.
We have an "active" class this year, but everyone settles down immediately for story time - especially if the story is acted out with flannel board puppets! It is amazing to see their interest.
My Project
We need story board puppets to use with classic stories -many stories that my children have not even heard of yet--classic story puppets such as The Little Red Hen, The Gingerbread Man, Corduroy, and others. When a story is acted out with puppets, it greatly enhances the comprehension of the story, especially for 5 year olds that may not have common experiences to be able to envision what the characters may look like or what they may be doing. Acting out stories also aid in vocabulary skills, attention span, self-control, and inspires a love of reading - all components that are crucial to academic success.
We currently have about 5 stories with puppets, which are shared amongst the kindergarten students - currently 148 students.
I am hoping to expand our library, our knowledge of classic tales, and our comprehension of these stories. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will enhance our education and inspire a love of reading for a lifetime. Thank you in advance!
