Has anyone ever called you a name that hurt your feelings? Have you ever seen someone get teased for something he or she was not able to do? Maybe you've even noticed someone being made fun of for no reason at all. Getting teased for not reading well is not funny; we can fix this!
My students are those with learning differences in the 2nd & 3rd grades.
They spend most of their time in the general education classroom in our 2nd and 3rd grade suburban Mississippi school, but they need extra help with literacy. Because of their deficits, many of them are teased, by both their peers, siblings, and some adults. I am always looking for innovative ways to help them feel independent and to become better readers. I feel that by providing them reading materials of varied topics will help peak their interests. And the more they read, the better they get. Then they will both be able to keep up academically with their peers, and eliminate the teasing that they have endured.
My Project
The first step in helping is to know that words can hurt. "Students everywhere should realize that they have it in their power to help someone by not calling them a name," says Eliza Byard, helping all kids feel safe in schools. "When you treat your classmates with respect and you're kind to people, you're helping them. And you may be helping them more than you even realize," Byard adds.
I think that Weekly Reader subscriptions, and other literacy materials that discuss how to handle being bullied, or to see points of view on both sides of this issue is important. They will also learn things in these weekly reader subscription issues like FEED USA's goals of inspiring children to choose healthy eating habits and to work on finding ways to recycle items in hopes to conserve our environment. All the practice with the materials will help the children demonstrate mastery of literacy skills and become happy, healthy, independent individuals.
These students have individual education programs.
They need accommodated resources to help them grasp concepts. By helping us fund these subscriptions and books, my students will get to read about what some kids are doing to stop bullying at their school. They can learn how the food pyramid got a makeover and how they can make healthy eating choices. These character education topics are vital in schools to ensure a productive society! The curriculum is aligned with the Common Core State Standard.
