Help me give my students solar system kits to build and create their own solar system models in class!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My classroom is centered around the idea that, "everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." We work to be the Science Genius of the Day. A Science Genius is a student who works hard, perseveres, and has strong teamwork skills.
All of my students are working to be Science Geniuses and they love it.
Throughout the class, they are working on vocabulary fluency, critical thinking skills, assessing and analyzing evidence, writing lab reports and launching themselves into a future in Science or another STEM related field. We can all be Science Geniuses, and my students work hard for it every day. Now that we're all geniuses, we want to experience science for ourselves!
The materials in this project will allow six classes of fifth-grade science students to create their own solar systems in class. This project will be used as a culminating experience at the end of their space unit. Not only will this project help reemphasize the different standards students have learned about space, but it will also allow them to be creative and be in charge of their own learning.
Students will research planets, create posters, and presentations with information about the different objects in space, and then create their own solar system models.
After they create their models, they will assess the effectiveness of these models and make a decision on how accurate their models are and how they could be improved.
