My students need sensory items to help keep them calm and grounded. These items provide input to help them organize themselves and feel comfortable in their own skin.
The students in my classroom all have developmental disabilities. The class is made up of children from different backgrounds and cultures. They are an amazing bunch of kids that teach us a great deal every day. Our job is to in return teach them and give them all that life can offer to succeed and be happy. The students in my classroom have difficulty communicating and dealing with everyday life. We work on a variety of things anywhere from cutting to tooth brushing and everything in the middle. One important area we focus on is the sensory component. Many of our students benefit from sensory input. It helps with calming their mind and bodies and helps give them input they need to focus. Therefore, we would like to provide more sensory items to help our students succeed, cope better and help deal with everyday life a little easier.
My Project
These materials help the children keep calm and provide certain input that they need daily to function in everyday life. These items are great tools to help my students feel organized and happy. Each person has certain ways to help them calm down and deal with things that can get very overwhelming. These items are great for students with developmental disabilities who may have difficulty expressing themselves and calming down appropriately when they are running on overdrive and can’t express themselves clearly. These items are great to be used proactively as well so they don’t get to that point of frustration. I have dedicated time each day for sensory activities to be explored. Items such as the pea pod, weighted blanket, and sensory toys will be added to this time of day. Once the students have used these they will be able to start to request using them at different times of the day when they feel they need them.
