Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The excitement of "Fun Friday" isn't just once a week, it's every day. This year, my students requested more STEAM such as science and art experiments, as well as computer activities. Many of our new resources are used on a daily basis during free choice time.
Our students come to school with many concerns outside of their control.
In our classroom, we utilize teamwork and social skills to the fullest potential. Our school is a small school making a big difference for students who have been placed in our building for various personal or private reasons. Many of them do not have "typical" experiences prior to entering the school system. Here, they receive additional resources and opportunities such as a smaller class size, as well as strategies for social and emotional learning in addition to academic skills.
My Project
We're going CAMPING? Yup, we've got an old large tent, headlamps and a literacy/math unit ready to roll out to students in grades K-3 this fall. Last year we studied animals and how to identify their sounds when we are "sleeping" in the tent. To start the school year off with a unique opportunity, we will have a camping "experience" with take-home sleeping bags and toaster oven s'mores to make our learning as hands-on and integrated as possible throughout all the curriculum areas!
Camping in the classroom will make this unit come to life for our urban students!
This part of our project is to request books at various reading levels that involve a camping theme and some of our favorite known characters. Each student will receive a camping-themed sticker book which can also inspire creative writing. Glowing stars for our ceiling will create an outdoor atmosphere and a camping play kit will be added to our kitchen supplies so that students can have fun with this theme all year long if desired.
